Mixed Media - DREAM canvas...

Happy Monday, everyone! Today's share for Mixed Media Monday is an 8x8 canvas that I made just for fun. I played with a few of my newest colors of Golden heavy body acrylic paints for the background, then layered some stenciling, and finally lots of findings with a twist...

Instead of layering all the findings and fun pieces flat across the center of the canvas, I turned two 3x3 mini canvases upside down, adhered them to the center of the 8x8, and layered the pieces inside and out of the mini canvases...it adds lots of fun dimension...

Here are a few stepouts showing how it came about. The first step was to gesso the backs of the mini canvases with black gesso, and pencil in their final position on the larger canvas. Then I randomly added some of my favorite acrylics for the background, and splattered with white gesso...

Then I added some molding paste through a stencil...only in two corners, since the other two would most likely be covered with embellishments...

Then it was time for fun. The first step was to glue the two mini canvases to the larger one - I used fabric glue for that, since it was canvas-to-canvas. Once it was good and dry, I started adding...and adding...and adding...chipboard die cuts, wood cut shapes, lots of layers of metal findings...the works!

I coated most of the pieces with black gesso before I glued them to the canvas, so I'd only have to do light touchups after they were all secured. I didn't want to risk having some of the black gesso cover areas of the background where I wanted color to show. Once I photographed that step, I thought the middle looked like a big black blob (and who wants to look at that? - haha). So I painted some of the pieces with one of the colors I planned to use, and added the seed beads for contrast, so you can see a bit more where it's going...

Once I had the embellishments secured, and painted that first small area, I thought the stenciled background areas looked a bit too bright. I was using Inka Gold metallic paints on the embellishments throughout the center, and I wanted that area to be the brightest part of the canvas. So I got out a black Stabilo pencil and shaded the stenciled areas to tone them down just a little, and add more dimension to the unembellished corners...

Here are some more detail shots. Once I had glued all the embellishments down, I touched up some of the areas with more black gesso, then started applying several different colors of Inka Gold metallic paints.

I love how some of my very-old metallic-colored buttons are so perfect for this type of project. Many years ago, you could find bags of these silver and gold buttons in the craft stores. There would be mixes of wonderful shapes - butterflies, hearts, stars, keys, zipper pulls - all sorts of goodies all in one bag, for about $5. Years later, I'm finally starting to get to the end of the supply from these button bags, and sad that they're not available anymore. You can see in this first pic one of the butterfly buttons, and on the left, the rope-edged pull-type button beneath the wooden scroll...

paper and metal flowers, hearts, buttons, findings...lots of goodies brushed with metallic colors...

This pretty round medallion was in my stash, so I topped it with a silver button, then put a Finnabair finding right in the center of the beautifully-edged button...

The "dream" key in this next photo was the inspiration for the title of the canvas and the small phrase stickers that were added around the finished canvas...

Grateful - Cardabilities #124

Hello, again! I was feeling in the mood to make a layered, softly-colored, shabby-chic card, and when I ran across the current sketch at Cardabilities, I knew it was a perfect inspiration that would be so much fun to play with.

Here's the finished card...

(and here's the inspiration sketch...)

This time, for a floral cluster, I used a couple mini gardenias, next to a small lily, and just a couple mini roses, all sitting inside a twine wreath (inspired by all those threads inside the circle on the sketch)...

and atop a chipboard heart and heart circle frame that are inked and coated with clear German glass glitter for a slightly sparkly, sugared look...

The sentiment, perfect for either a thank you card or friendship card, (because I like to leave my options open when I'm not making a card for a specific use at the time) is a Tim Holtz "Big Chat" sticker backed with chipboard for stability...

Supplies:
Patterned papers:   My Minds Eye Lost & Found "Heirloom"
Chipboard heart and frame:   Maya Road            Dies:   Sizzix "Flowers Branches & Leaves"
Flowers:   Wild Orchid Crafts              Pearls:   Recollections              Sentiment:   Tim Holtz "Big Chat"
Lace and pearl stem:   local craft store
Miscellaneous:   clear medium German glass glitter,  twine,  Liquitex Ink! acrylic inks - Carbon Black & Titanium White

Hot Summer Pink...

Hello again! The other day as I was putting away unused supplies and bits and pieces, I found an A2 sized piece that I had cut a round aperture into, and run through my brick wall embossing folder, then set aside when I changed my mind on the direction of the project I was working on. Of course, in the midst of my mini cleanup, I had an idea what I could do with the piece, so instead of continuing to straighten things up, I got to work making a mess again! :)

The round aperture I had cut turned out to be the right size for me to use one of my LaLa Land Crafts stitched circle dies to create a frame...and then the ideas kept coming, so I kept working...and this is the end product...

I used the same green ink that I used inside the aperture to color the edges of the white leaves and berries. It was a happy find to see that the lilies were the perfect color to go with the small hot pink roses...

The little punched butterflies were accented with pink Stickles and tiny pearls. I still get use from many of my older punches - it's one of the reasons I still hold on to many of my basic tools...you never know when they'll be perfect for a current project, and they're faster to use than setting up my electronic cutter for a last minute accent...

I pencil-traced the aperture onto the base of the card, and inside it I added some stamped leaves and pink stems that would coordinate with the flowers I planned to place on the top layer around the outside of the framed circle. Then I used foam tape to attach the top embossed layer to the card base...

And lastly, a couple closeups of the embellishments at the bottom of the card...

Supplies:
Embossing Folder:   Sizzix/Tim Holtz "Bricked and Woodgrain Set"
Dies:   LaLaLand Crafts "Stitched Circles" and "Berry Flourish"
Stamp:   Simon Says Stamp "Summer Garden"             Punch:   Martha Stewart "3-in-1 Butterfly"
Flowers:   Wild Orchid Crafts (roses);   local craft store (lilies)
Pearls:   Recollections            Pearl stem:   local craft store
Miscellaneous:   "Pink" Stickles,  white twine

Thanks so much for stopping by for a visit today!

Just Happy...

Summer temperatures have me in the mood for lighter, softer colors mixed with bright white.

For today's card, I played again with what I call "altered edges." I used a die designed, I think, for straight edges, but I put them on a diagonal slant to add some fun layering to the front of the card...

At the top, a flower cluster of cream and white lilies, and aqua and white mini roses, sitting atop a loopy diecut doily, accented with lots of loopy twine bows and pearls...

Over on the side, another smaller version, with just a few aqua flowers...

And a sentiment that will work for a variety of occasions, as the need arises...

Supplies:
Dies:   Spellbinders A2 Scalloped Borders Two;   LaLa Land Crafts Filigree Corner;   Memory Box Quinn Flourish;   Sizzix Flowers Branches & Leaves
Lace:   TheFunkieJunkie.com            Flowers:   Wild Orchid Crafts            Pearls:   Recollections

Just a Little Pop of Orchid...

Happy Friday, everyone! I'm closing out this week with a soft and shabby little all-occasion card.

Now and then when I make a softly colored card, I like to add one small touch of complementary color (well, today's is technically "near complementary") as a little "surprise for the eyes."  This card started with soft greens and tans, and with the little pop of orchid, it gave me just the bit of fun contrast I was looking for...

I pulled a couple snippets of lace from my grab bag of partly used pieces, and they were just the right length to use here...little peeks sneaking out behind the flowers. I added some Viva Glass Effects Gel to look like little dew drops on the flowers and leaves...

This orchid colored rose was made up from small flat (2cm) Kaisercraft flowers, and the bunches of pearl stamens are from ChocolateLetters on Etsy...

In addition to the clear gel, there's a light coating of clear coarse glitter on the two-toned Prima leaf...

Supplies:
Patterned papers:  Prima "Princess" collection
Dies:   Spellbinders "Grand Rectangles" & "Labels 23";   Sizzix "Flowers Branches & Leaves"
Flowers:   Wild Orchid Crafts,  Kaisercraft            Stamens:   ChocolateLetters on Etsy
Pearls:   Recollections
Miscellaneous:    Laces, twine, embellished stick pin, Viva Glass Effects Gel

Thanks so much for visiting today...have a wonderful weekend!

Wishing...

It's been a while since I've made a card heavy with die cuts, and I was ready to play with a few dies that I haven't used in a bit, along with a new one, and a couple often used favorites. And since my mother's birthday is coming up very soon, what better time to make one with lots of flowers and pearls and girly embellishments? :)

So here's Mom's card this year...layers of cream diecut cardstock with lots of pretty pink flowers and loopy satin ribbon bows...

There are several layers of cardstock stacked to make the diecut scalloped bottom border, but let's start with a closeup of that yummy Prima flower that's the centerpiece...I need to find another set of this one...it has all the fun layers and gems that I love so much...

I added some handcrafted cherry blossoms and some mulberry roses alongside it...

Here you can see the layers...three in all. The card base has a diecut scallop along the bottom edge, the second layer has a different scallop edge and an open scrollwork edging above it, and the top layer has a scalloped bottom edge and the distressed punchinella die cut along the top right...foam tape holds all the layers down and gives it a bit of dimension...

And I couldn't resist adding a lone cherry blossom to the top corner...

Supplies:
Dies:   Spellbinders "A2 Scalloped Borders 2";   Sizzix Tim Holtz "Mixed Media";   Sizzix "Flowers Branches & Leaves";   Simon Says Stamp "Wishing";   La-La Land Crafts "Cherry Blossom Flowers" and "Stitched Elements"
Stamp:   Simon Says Stamp "Sending & Wishing"
Flowers:   Prima (large pink);   Wild Orchid Crafts (small roses)             Stamens:   ChocolateLetters on Etsy
Pearls:   Recollections               Miscellaneous:   satin ribbon
